The Time of Nick

Sabbatical Notes

Week 10

March 14, 2010

Final Sabbatical Week

For my last week, I was part of the “Madison Reads Leopold” event at the UW Arboretum and ice fished with family at the cabin. Plus a big bathroom remodel: recycled tiles, reused sink, efficient toilet (free with Madison rebate!).

Week 9

March 7, 2010

After hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and a few other stops, Nick is back home for the final week of his sabbatical. He will be in church next Sunday, March 14.

Week 8

February 28, 2010

Having communed with John Muir and Yosemite Valley, Acacia and I had a few days back in L.A. with my cousin and his family, including a 6-month- old daughter, Eden. (What a fitting name for thinking of us and creation!) Next stops were Joshua Tree National Park and some family in Phoenix, and then down into the Grand Canyon. And soon on the way home!

Week 7

February 21, 2010

Nick and Acacia are traveling down the West Coast through National Parks for several days of rest and relaxation before heading home.

Week 6

February 14, 2010

I am out of Holden Village! I have plenty of great mountain photos to share (when the clouds weren’t in the way). The staff was great. Meals were great. We even did Holden Evening Prayer. And now my legs need to rest from skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and sauna-ing. Next stops—Seattle with    Acacia and on to Olympic National Park. Missing you all!

Week 5

February 7, 2010

This update is written early because tomorrow morning (Feb. 1), I go two hours up lake on a boat, then 12 miles up into the mountains—so no contact with the outside world at Holden Village! I’ll be there for 10 days. Two nights ago, I camped with wolves howling in Glacier N.P. This morning I  worshiped at Grace LC in Wenatchee, WA where I did my internship and got to tell them all about you!

Week 4

January 31, 2010

The class at Luther Seminary is wrapped up. Prof. Fredrickson will be in Madison at Advent LC in a couple weeks if you’d like to hear his engaging teaching. Last weekend, Acacia joined me in the Twin Cities. We’ve had the chance to catch up with many friends and family here. And a bit of below zero skiing! This afternoon (Thurs.), I head west!

Week 3

January 24, 2010

Finished in Chicago with a brief stopover at home. I’m now back at my nourishing mother (“alma mater”) of Luther Seminary in St. Paul with the ever nourishing and provocative Prof. David Fredrickson on the Gospel of John. I haven’t yet found much ecology in the Gospel, but I’m looking for it! Days so far are rounded out with my cousin staying at my uncle’s house. Missing you!

Week 2

January 17, 2010

I soon finish my ecology and faith class in Chicago and prepare to travel to the Twin Cities. We’ve talked of zoning and water and logging and more this week. I read, among other things, “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” and I have the first hymn to share on my return. The ice is beautiful on the shore of Lake Michigan. And I think of you!

Week 1

January 10, 2010

So much already, and only 3 days in so far! Getting familiar with Chicago mass transit. The blessing of water at a Greek Orthodox Epiphany Eve service. Lots of reading on climate change. Questions of how to enjoy God. What can we do about the world? When? How much? And already missing you much!

Week 0

January 3, 2010

For now, I’ll let you know I’m mostly packed and have a box of books ready to travel with me. This afternoon, I’ll be catching the train into Chicago and tomorrow begin two weeks of class at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago (LSTC). Thanks for your prayers and blessings!
