Campus Ministry Sunday: October
The Ministry Board invites you to participate in a special
offering this week. Lutheran Campus Ministry is fostered at
three locations in our synod through these offerings.
Whether it’s the fellowship of spaghetti dinner, a safe and
warm place to study, a listening ear when the questions of
life can seem most overwhelming – your generosity will bless
someone you may never know. Or, it may be that one of our
own college students finds their way to a deeper life of
faith and daring confidence in God’s grace in their lives
through the ministry you will help to provide.
Campus Minister Welcome!
Campus Pastor Emily Tveite is our guest preacher as we focus
on the needs and opportunities of our witness on college
campuses. Emily began serving at the Lutheran Campus
Ministry in Madison one year ago. LCM in Madison unites
university students in God’s grace, through hospitality,
spiritual growth, and worship.
10:15: Faith and Life for
Young Adults (Sanctuary)
Is it your grandchildren, a niece, or a nephew, who might be
“beyond” the years of confirmation and wondering how faith
addresses the challenges they face? Are you wondering how
your own children might navigate these years ahead? When
high school graduates disappear from our worship gatherings,
they seem barely more than children. After four years in
college, they are full grown adults. This morning Rev. Emily
Tveite will lead us to consider the academic, physical,
financial, and social needs of these young people, as well
as how we respond to these needs through the lens of our
Reformation Festival &
Worship At 9:00 am
Followed by Breakfast, Fellowship
& Table Talks
October 31, 2017, will mark 500 years since the
beginning of the Lutheran Reformation, spurred by Martin
Luther’s posting of the Ninety-Five assertions about how the
church needed to change. How do you think God might be
calling the church to change today? What’s our role in
“ongoing reformation”? This important anniversary invites
preparation. Let’s reflect on this occasion as we worship,
learn, sing, and serve. And let’s have some fun! How shall
1. With ONE Festival Worship
Service on Sunday, October 30th at 9 a.m. (No 11 am
Worship this day). In our Grace Gathering we will dedicate
the new Carillon to the glory of God, adding joyful noises
with voice, percussion, brass, and strings in the midst of
2. With breakfast and fellowship
the way Martin and Katie did (and Germans still do)
with meats, cheeses, bread and rolls, butter, jam, juice,
and coffee. Plan on finding some Fruhstuck in Agape¸ along
with conversation to feed your soul while the Preschool
through 5th Grade study scripture in Sunday School
(breakfast served from 10:15 to 11:30).
3. With our own “Talk Tables.”
Martin and Katie Luther seldom dined alone. There were
always students, colleagues and family members around the
dining table. Much of what Luther had to say on these
occasions was written down by various note-takers and these
collections have been published under the title, “Martin
Luther’s Table Talk” or Tischreden. Some topics for talk at
our tables will include music, a Luther garden, exploring
his writings in worship and study, seasonal reflections
(Advent or Lent), resources to study, field trip ideas, and
whatever else anyone can think of. (Of course we’ll need one
of those note-takers at each table….)
Let the (early) Festival begin!
Servers Needed for
If you are willing to help out with worship on Christmas Eve
or Christmas Day, we are in need of a lector for the 10:30
p.m. Christmas Eve service and an Assisting Minister at the
4:00 service on Christmas Eve. We also need a deacon and a
fellowship host for the 9:00 Christmas morning service. If
you could help with any of these needs, please let Roxanne
know as soon as possible. Thank you!

4th Annual Trunk or Treat
Sunday, October 30 from 4-5 pm
It’s like Trick-or-Treating…except we all meet right here in
the parking lot of St. Stephen’s! Last year we had almost 90
people show up, so don’t miss the fun! Here’s how it works:
Folks clean out the trunk of their vehicle and decorate it
using a fun theme. Then, they grab some treats and cruise
over to church. Kids get dressed up in their costumes and go
from vehicle to vehicle “trick or treating.” Even if you are
not a parent or if your children are grown, please join us
by decorating your vehicle and taking part! This is a great
cross-generational opportunity for St. Stephen’s folks, and
also a neat community outreach opportunity! Don’t miss out!
Spread some St. Stephen’s joy! Bring your lawn chairs, sit
near your vehicle, pass out candy, and get to know each
other! It’s OK to just be a “trunker” or to just be a “treater”
if that works better for you.
Guys Night Out 2nd Tuesdays
We will gather at 7:00 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Mr. Brew’s Taphouse for fun and fellowship! All men of St. Stephen’s
are welcome to join.
